What is hazing and how did it start? The definition of hazing is any action or situation, with or without the consent of the participants, which recklessly, intentionally or unintentionally endangers the mental or physical well being of a person (usually a student).Hazing started in the 16th century when Greek sailors would harass rookie sailors when the weather was "hazy". Fraternities used to be a place where people would get together and talk about academics (before civil war). After the civil war, the students who were in the military felt they had such a deep bond with other students in the military, that they decided the frat was a new "brotherhood". They decided that in order to make the pledges experience the traumatic events they had to experience, they would harass/torture the pledges, thus began the rise of hazing.
